Description

Fifteen kilometres to the northeast of The Algarve's glorious beaches, on the banks of the Rio Arade, lies the attractive town of Silves. Rusty-coloured rooftops, red-stone walls and narrow streets that wind around a hillside dominate this tranquil rural town.

One of Silves' principal attractions is its mighty, red-brick castle, hailed as one of the best-preserved castles in the Algarve. This ancient structure, which overlooks the town, with its large defensive gates and impregnable city walls, provides evidence of Silves' illustrious past.
From 700 until 1200 AD, when Moors from North Africa ruled the Algarve, Silves was the capital, and the defensive stronghold of the region and such was the importance of its castle.

The rustic-coloured castle offers fabulous views of the town below and the surrounding countryside, with the translucent waters of the Arade River rushing by the town.
The old, walled quarter of the town has remained unaltered for many centuries, untouched by mass tourism in any way. As well as the incredible castle, the town's cathedral, its ancient city gate, the Ponte Romana bridge and its' archaeological museum are all 'must-see' sights of this charming rural town.

With laid-back cafes and bars lining its narrow streets, Silves embraces a welcoming café culture, where locals and visitors alike muse away the hours, taking in the unhurried ambience on a shaded terrace of a local café.
Inland from the hectic lifestyle of the coast, Silves offers a more relaxed and slower pace of life and is the perfect place to get to know authentic Portuguese culture.

During August, Silves hosts an unmissable mediaeval Fair where the town transforms into another era with live music in the castle grounds, plenty of market stalls, mediaeval jousting and entertainment. Equally fun is the traditional Christmas market which boasts Bavarian-style chalet stalls and live music.
The town is well situated for those who love golf, tennis, padel-tennis, hiking and water sports.
Excellent walking trails abound, including several from right outside the house. The beach towns of Ferragudo and Carvoeiro are within a 20-minute drive and offer fabulous powder-sand beaches, kayaking, boat rides and SUP.

This stunning architect-designed contemporary villa is located on a hill just outside of Silves. Completely renovated 3 years ago, it welcomes guests with spacious and bright living spaces. The interconnecting rooms flow in an elegant and timeless style , creating a light and airy ambience. The design and style of the modern, with slight touches of rustic and wooden elements, create the perfect balance between the outside surrounding landscape and the interior's contemporary design. Its two ensuite bedrooms have a minimalist and comfortable feel and accommodate four guests.

The outside terraces become second living and dining areas, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the sunshine while having a glass of local Algarve wine from one of the nearby vineyards or a refreshing swim in the beautiful pool!
The beautiful mediaeval town of Silves is just 3 km away and there are huge array of countryside restaurants, bars and pavement cafes within ten minutes. Fine dining can easily be enjoyed with Michelin-quality establishments in nearby towns and resorts.

The modern design with traditional elements is based on the Golden Ratio' used by artists and architects, which is considered the intrinsic beauty of size and proportions. The carefully chosen furniture and fittings harmonise with the rooms' size and shape. A remote-controlled gate provides access to the garden. The private villa has water-based underfloor heating and cooling in all rooms and is in top condition.

Nice modern house

House in a remote location which is 2 miles west of Sives in a town called Falcho. Pros: nice outdoor area with nice views House is very well equipped. Owner was very helpful with recommendations. Silves is a very quaint town with a castle which is not too touristy and has everything you would need. Cons: GPS will not get you to the house. From Silves drive west about 1.5 miles to Falcho. There are 3 streets all right hand turns. Take the 3rd one. Drive about .25 mile (while driving look up to left, 1st house you see on hill is the house). Continue driving and make a left just before paved road ends and drive over a very small bridge. Follow dirt road about 100 yards to gate for house. Highly recommend an auto transmission because it’s a very steep driveway with a gate you have to stop for in the middle. House is located in the “valley of barking dogs”. At least 6 dogs bark all day and night. ”
