Beautiful apartment on the Mediterranean

When I first booked this property, I knew it would be nice. I just didn't know nice everything would turn out to be! The apartment itself was even nicer and roomier than I had expected from the photos. But the view and location were amazing! From the photos, I could tell the apartment was very close to the water, but figured the photos were somehow making it look closer. Not so. From the 2nd floor balcony we had a magnificent 180 plus degree view of the Mediterranean! In front of the building was a one-way street with limited parking plus a wide walking lane; after 6PM it was a pedestrian walkway filled with strolling families, couples, etc. We loved being able to walk to many restaurants, grocery, and shops. We are an older couple (I hate saying that, but...), and were both going through back issues which caused mobility issues, but even though we couldn't hike or go for really long walks, we were delighted to just walk to wherever we wanted or needed. Most of the restaurants were very reasonable, and the wines delightfully priced! It's going to be very hard to pay 15 USD for a 5 ounce pour when we go out at home (Texas, USA)! L'Escala is pretty much the anchovy and sardine capital of the world, which wasn't exciting for me, but it certainly was to my husband. Again, the apartment itself was lovely; the furnishings and decor were very contemporary yet welcoming. The kitchen was complete and well stocked. The washer is supposed to be a dryer also, but I never did figure it out. My spoiled husband and I had to help put clothes on the drying rack, which, of course, is the environmentally efficient way to dry clothes anyway. We didn't do any actual cooking, as we so often brought food back from lunches and/or dinners. Plus it made no sense to buy everything needed for cooking. Fresh bread, wine, cheese, and Iberian ham were all we needed! Both identical bathrooms were modern and roomy enough. The main bedroom area had a king bed and could be closed off from living areas. The other two bedrooms had two twin beds each (maybe a trundle in one) that the owner said could be put together for a king. It turned out we were there by ourselves, so had no need for extra bedrooms. The two bedrooms were small; they would be fine for kids, but some adults might find them very small. However, I speak from an American viewpoint, and I figure almost everyone who is a part of Third Home probably owns a decent sized home, where the bedrooms are spacious. We are spoiled. I am aware that not everyone around the world has the spacious, yet middle-class home, that I do. If the bedrooms are viewed as simply a place to sleep, then they are fine. The three large Ikea-type closets actually form the wall between the main bedroom and living/dining area; if you had adult guests, they would be using some of that closet area. Again, not a big deal when you can look out the window and see the Mediterranean. The pool on the rooftop is a narrow infinity pool running the length of the building, giving a 360 degree view. There are lounges there for use, although most were locked. It was never busy when we were there, so we did have lounges available. Parking was under the building and convenient to access from the street and the apartment. The owner suggested many side trips as well as dining opportunities. We did drive to Figueres, Salvador Dali's hometown and museum, which was the highest thing on our list. Someday I'd love to go back and spend a lot more time there. We had tickets for a winery tour and tasting at Peralata and plans to visit the ruins, but had an issue with the rental car, so missed both. We booked tickets for Perala through Viator/Winalist, and were asked to rate the tour. We explained that we ended up missing it, and Winalist wrote a nice note and refunded our ticket price. I was delightfully shocked! So this is a plug for them. We just loved sitting on the balcony and taking little strolls in town, so we did not feel compelled to make more excursions. Everyone was very friendly and helpful: no blatant display of the understandable anti-tourism found in main cities (although we did not experience that in Barcelona or Madrid). I did buy what I thought were way too many inexpensive linen/cotton clothes, but since I had my suitcase stolen from the train from Girona to Barcelona, my purchases proved fortunate. So, there are many opportunities for shopping! My husband decided that he thinks he's done with long flights to Europe, except if we can go back to this apartment in L'Escala! So I will be in planning mode sooner than he thinks. I celebrated my 78th birthday and we celebrated our 58th wedding anniversary in L'Escala, so everything was perfect.”
