Description

Hololio House – Historic Homestead at Clevedon Polo Club

Highlights:
• Historic 1892 kauri homestead
• 200-acre farm near Clevedon Village
• Walk to Clevedon Farmers’ Market

Set within Hololio Estate, Hololio House is a historic 1892 kauri homestead offering a relaxed countryside stay just outside Clevedon Village. Positioned on a 200-acre farm along the Wairoa River terrace, the home captures a distinctly rural side of New Zealand while remaining close to village conveniences, local dining, beaches, regional parks, and walking trails.

Inside, the homestead feels spacious, characterful, and comfortably lived-in, with generous rooms designed for gathering. The main living areas include inviting lounge spaces, a dining area, and a kitchen suited to relaxed family meals and longer stays. Heritage details, warm furnishings, broad windows, and country textures create a setting that feels authentic to the estate rather than overly polished.

The home is well suited to larger families, multigenerational stays, and wedding preparations, with spacious indoor and outdoor areas for getting ready, relaxing, and spending time together. Bedrooms are arranged to support group comfort, while full-house access includes the laundry, veranda, BBQ, two private lawns, and the rural surrounds. The atmosphere is peaceful and informal, with room to spread out while still feeling connected to the landscape.

Outdoor living is a major part of the Hololio experience. Guests can relax on the wide veranda, enjoy the private lawns, wander the romantic gardens, or explore the farm walks and village walkways. A scenic 5 km farm and Wairoa River trail adds a memorable sense of place, while the surrounding paddocks reflect the estate’s working rural character. From December to March, the property is home to Hololio Polo Club activity, while winter brings sheep farming across the land.

Clevedon Village is approximately a short drive or 10-minute walk away, offering a small supermarket, gas station, pharmacy, pub, cafés, restaurants, and the beloved Clevedon Farmers’ Market on Sunday mornings and Friday evenings during summer. The wider region offers hiking and cycling trails, beaches, mountain views, and access to the Hauraki Gulf via Pine Harbour marina. Hololio House is a country homestead with history, space, and rural character, ideal for guests seeking a grounded estate experience close to village life.

Good to Know: Hololio House and gardens also operate as a weddings and events venue, but events and parties are permitted only by prior arrangement. Please enquire directly for venue hire. The owners have four friendly dogs on the estate, including two working dogs and two terriers.

Pretty & Peaceful in Clevedon, Auckland

We spent a week at this gorgeous 130-year-old villa in what must surely be Auckland’s most peaceful farm stay. The views over the summer polo fields are incredible and sunrise is simply stunning with horses grazing, ducks waddling and newborn lambs calling for their Mums. We enjoyed cycling around the vast property and my boys enjoyed visiting all the animals. Clevedon is a charming village with many lovely eateries. Be sure to try The Farmhouse Cafe, we loved it so much we returned the next day for their famous cinnamon buns and its dog-friendly vibes. Hallertau Brewery is also superb and just a few mins drive away and we loved the scenic coastal drive out to Clevedon Oysters. The villa is well stocked with plump cushions and toasty warm with the wood burning fire heating up the whole downstairs. Plenty of seating options and lovely vintage touches with exquisite antiques and books throughout the house. Plenty of room and full of character, charm and grace. Josephine & Nick were faultless hosts and we felt very welcome in their gorgeous home and property. A magical week for our family thank you very much for having us.”

charming location and friendly host

Hololio house was a beautiful location and a historical house full of old-world vintage charm. We enjoyed building the fire and cooking in the kitchen. Josephine was a very gracious and kind hostess and made us feel comfortable and welcomed! Despite the cold winter weather we had plenty of sunny days and had so much fun checking out Hobbiton and Cathedral Cove as well as various beaches in Auckland. Don't miss the amazing Dim Sum at Star Seafood restaurant just 20 min away. I miss it already. ”
